For nerds nonscientific, this means Zach makes coatings enameled wires and gets to play mad scientist at work. I can not speak to the quality of their maniacal laughter, however.

Steve: Thanks for being here and for sharing your brother story Rebellion! We hear so many people every day to cope with difficult situations, and I think history will help to show how to convert your kryptonite in his superpower.
In a sentence or two, what was the old Zach as?
I was very inactive and the only activity I had was brief walking and standing while in the laboratory. A typical lunch for me was 1,000 calories or more at McDonalds or other fast food, then came home and usually eat again and eat a high calorie food even more.
Steve: Sounds like a routine that everyone can be caught quite easily. Now, was there a specific moment when he decided to make a change? What inspired you to start?
In February 2015 I weighed myself and found that I was over 300 pounds. Therefore, I have a membership and told me I was going to do 30 minutes of cardio 4 times a week. I did for a few months slowly incorporating healthy eating habits and lose my some weight.
However, I had a crisis in my life, in May 2015. My wife and the love of my life left me out of the blue.
I guess a lot of my motivation is becoming a better man after emotional trauma. Needless to say I was crushed and months of my life were very dark. The only way I could find solace or escape was on decreasing scale. If I lost weight I felt like I accomplished something and gave meaning to my life. I started to convince me that my marriage broke down because I was a bum unattractive fat. actively I started to train harder and eat better to prove to myself that I was not that person. I understand that this is not a healthy way to see weight loss, but this is the way it started for me. However, once I started to heal after she left it became more of a lifestyle change.
A co-worker told me about Nerd Fitness and Art of Manliness . Being a fellow pharmacy and rebel Nerd Fitness, he acknowledged that appreciate the site and how useful it can be for me. I remember the first article I read was Joe transformation story. This article much inspired me to start a new lifestyle. Along the way, he also picked up a Fitbit charge hr (the model that monitors heart rate) to help me out nerd in statistics related to exercise and burning calories.
Steve: We all go through these struggles in our own way - some people more productive and healthier than others. Honestly, it seems that things are compassionate with one of the healthiest possible and positive ways: use as a catalyst to look in the mirror and get to work on fixing it yourself.
Fast Forward Let :? What is the new you like
As I write this is 5:30 am and I'm eating a healthy breakfast. Then I'll head to the gym to do cardio for about 45 min. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, free weigh I incorporate training with my training partner in which most of the major muscle groups in these 3 days. I usually cardio Sunday off.
My diet is especially Paleo however, is not entirely so. For me it is easier to count calories so try to stay in the range of 1,800 calories for most of the day except weekends where my calorie intake a bit since I'm lifting weights. My dinner (favorite meal of the day) is always entirely Paleo. It is vegetable stir fry either, or I make a great omelet vegetables.
Steve: Sounds like you've found a new routine that works for you, you can live permanently. Good on ya, and congratulations on finding a stable and antifragile foundation of health. Tell me more about your exercise strategy.
My exercise strategy has evolved over the last year. It started slow. I would normally work four or five days a week for 30 minutes. But when I started to lose more weight (range ~ 40 pounds) you want to do more. He longed to be more active. I started running around July 2015, just to go out.
I love being outdoors and running was for me a way to do just that. I started doing a method of running / walking to work to run longer distances. Before I knew I was running multiple miles without stopping, that was huge for me. The joy of running also made me increase my training frequency, simply because I was starting to enjoy being outdoors and active.
Instead of working 5 days a week, I started working on Saturday and sometimes Sunday. Running was my training from July to early November 2015. However, I have learned that I am a broker of good weather and when it was cold (cold northern Indiana), I went back in the gym.
gyms are not always the most fun, but for me that could overcome the boredom of being on a treadmill or elliptical as my gym has a nice movie theater set up. Once you heated I plan to return outdoors for more running. Also while in treatment work walk around my building as much as possible and do pushups in my office after lunch.
Steve: everything counts, and I love knowing that you are exercising in a way that you like, not one that you feel you have to do. How your diet evolve along your journey?
I started out with a calorie tracking application. I did that for quite some time. Most of my early diet was the addition of a cheat day where I could eat what I wanted and as much as I wanted. Many people say that at first should be just a cheat meal, but this was not the case for me. I would enjoy Saturday ... to the point that it would scare small children.
Although this may not have been the best strategy, I was still losing weight because I started out in a high weight.
Having this trap day gave me something to look forward to during the monotony of counting calories during the week. However, my eating habits began to change, and cheat day turned slowly into a trap food. Today I still feel more relaxed when it comes to my diet on Saturdays, but not actively go all out already.
Then I started to find some delicious recipes thanks to paleo eating paleo article on this site. I started with sauteed vegetables . Credit still recipe for today, for bringing me enjoy vegetables . then he branched into chilies, stews and other frozen foods storable and easily could thaw and eat during the week as a lunch or dinner. Sundays are my night preparing food for the week.
This also introduced a love for cooking. I love being in the kitchen, which for me is basically like chemistry in a laboratory ... you can eat !.
Steve: vegetables were hard for me to enjoy at first too, and I like sauteed was the big game changer. I want to know more about diet - sounds like a gradual adjustment rather than a cannonball into the deep end. fair assessment?
My diet has definitely improved over the course of my fitness journey. I love food now that would never dream of desire 2 years (mostly vegetables, my favorite was peppers and broccoli). My diet is still not perfect, but still experimenting in the kitchen to try new delicious things.
Steve: Perfect does not exist, so the props for not beating yourself up when you eat something that is not perfect. In general, what was the most difficult change for you to do?
Regular exercise is probably the most difficult to make a habit of. I had some major setbacks in the beginning when it came to exercise. Now, I try not to go more than 3 consecutive days without some kind of cardiovascular exercise unless you are seriously ill.
Steve: How to track your progress?
My gym has a scale and I weigh myself once a week. I probably should have weighed myself less often because I had some weeks where I gained weight. However, I have an obsessive personality and it is difficult for me not to have some kind of empirical evidence that I did something that week. The weeks that gain would be quickly compensated me for weeks in which lost more than usual, so everything went well.
Steve: Hey, we need data nerds sometimes, and it's fun to track and also we can help keep you on track. Sounds like his frequent weigh-ins helped keep accounts. I weight about once a week as well. He had one big change to prove their success?
This is difficult for me to define a change. I would say the most important thing for me was doing everything slowly. Do not expect to have results overnight and wanted to ease into a new lifestyle rather than jumping headlong into one and burn out (I credit this thinking to Nerd Fitness).
My training started slow, while still had bad eating habits. Then slowly I started eating better. Then gradually a healthy life began to fall into place. Fitness nerd was a great help and inspiration along the way.
Steve: No level up overnight, so when we have inadequate or unrealistic expectations about getting immediate results (or results in 30 days), it can lead to disappointment and falling the wagon. who have the most amazing friends and family who saw me through difficult times and helped me push past the pain. I have weekly visits from friends texts and just genuinely concerned about how I was doing and I would encourage my new fitness activities.
My mother (Kim Szczepanski), father (Larry Ingol), Dan Lewis, Alaina Gilliom, Joel Harter (Harter whole family), Grant Steele, and Carrisa Ormsby. These are the people who gave sacrificially time of their lives to invest in mine. They encouraged me every step of the way when it came to my goals. I will always be grateful for your friends and I can not give any honor without giving honor to them first.
Steve: What would you say to someone in your situation right now to help them? Someone who has tried and failed, but willing to try again?
I would say very slow start. You do not have to be a fitness guru in one day. Just start out by telling yourself you point a couple of days a week (for about 20 min) and make an effort to do so. If you miss a day that is not a big deal, but keep in. You will be amazed at the amount of movement can be built to start idle. Set new goals for yourself on a weekly or biweekly basis. Perhaps you start by drawing three days a week and after 2 weeks you decide to work out 4 days. Then, after another two weeks maybe you begin to incorporate healthy eating into your diet (what you see as you). The most important thing is simply to start small. Oh, and if you have the willpower to stop after one day, one day incorporate cheating on your diet. Deceive days greatly helped my mental health.
Steve: What are you excited to do now that you were not physically able to do before? Any activity in particular?
I can finally make unassisted pull up ! I was working on it for a couple of months and am now able to do so. I am currently working on making 2 in a row.
Steve: That's a "Mission Complete" Safe! Pull-ups can be my favorite exercise (along with the dead weight!) Any other goals that you are using for motivation forward?
Over the next two years my goal is to go all the John Muir Trail with my best friend Dan, and my short-term goal is to complete a 5k this spring.
Steve :? His physical appearance has changed ... what has changed in you
I would say I'm finally starting to figure out who I am as a person. I can perform activities now that I was not able to continue in my previous life. I feel more content than I've been, like I'm finally at peace.
Steve: Well, we have come to the credibility of the interview section nerd ... but as a chemist, I would not worry too much. Let's start with the basics :? Star Wars or The Lord of the Rings
This question is torture for me because I love them both dearly. I'm a big fan of Tolkien and I have read most of his work with respect to Middle-earth. I also read the Silmarillion, that her son Christopher helped create. However, he also knew Star Wars since I was 8 years old. I think I'll have to lean Lord of the Rings.

Hmm, I've always enjoyed Spider-man comics. I think it would be amazing to have spider sense, impressive agility and super strength.
Zach Superpowers
Too often we respond to negative and stressful in our life with more negativity and stress events, which can create this brutal downward spiral.

We all go through difficult times in life. It's our way of acting in the hard times that make us what we are. We are not responsible for the hard times hit us, but we responsible for how we respond . We have the opportunity to choose the way forward. Let's see how Zach continued to make right decisions:

You may hear stories about people who made drastic changes and are still puffing, but in our experience are the exception to the rule. We hear of thousands of people in this quest to regain health, and most of those who are successful do very small, strategic and deliberate changes in the right direction. Do not make this harder than it should be!
- Seek help (support system): Having a strong support system can be the difference between success and failure. Zach got weekly texts, and felt accountable to their friends and family. This feeling - no matter how you create it (online support, text, the support person, or a combination) is the force behind making a good decision when you really do not want. It's what helps us avoid the dark side when we have had a hard day or a long week. It was so important in the history of Zach I felt I needed to give credit to them first and foremost -. Okay, maybe not so soon, because it took me quite some time of cooking the same thing before starting to spread. But this is a step in the right direction.
