Are vitamin supplements good for you?

vitamin supplements are an interesting topic. We all know that vitamins are good for us, but good for you vitamin supplements? The first thing I want to talk about this topic is just different types of common vitamins that are used and what patients used to. Why I think this issue is important? Basically, people have the misconception that all over-the-counter (OTC) are safe, but in fact, should be treated as a prescription medication. Some are also broken down (metabolized) by the same liver enzymes and excreted (renal) just as some prescription drugs. For this reason, be sure to ask your pharmacist or primary care physician about the products you want to use before starting them. With that said, I will now start talking very briefly what we know about common / supplements used vitamins and their signs.

Biotin

  • Used to prevent biotin deficiency, weight loss, hair loss, brittle nails, healthy skin and mild depression
  • probably safe when 10 mg per day are used and has few interactions with other drugs, but go ahead and talk to your health care provider or pharmacist if you are taking medication for seizures

calcium

  • used for low levels of calcium, bone problems, rickets, leg cramps, low parathyroid and other disorders
  • This is probably safe for most patients but health professionals do not prefer that calcium from food sources is obtained (eg. low-fat milk) through a supplement pill

collagen

  • is used for arthritis, acne, psoriasis and other diseases
  • it is likely safe when used orally up to 20 kg

folate (folic acid)

  • is used to prevent and treat low levels of folate, diseases of pregnancy, restless leg syndrome and other diseases
  • is likely safe when used in lower doses to 1000 mcg daily

Iron

  • Typically used for anemia (red blood cells), restless leg syndrome, heart failure disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), disease Crohn's disease, depression, and many other disorders
  • is probably safe when used at levels tolerable intake of 45 mg or less. Common side effects of higher doses lead to a lot of gastrointestinal
  • effects

Vitamin B12

  • Used for anemia, memory loss, illness Alzheimer, depression, osteoporosis, energy and other disorders.
  • considered safe when used orally and generally considered safe, even in large doses.

Vitamin C

  • is used to treat scurvy, improve the immune system, energy and other disorders
  • considered safe when taken by orally and not more than 2000 mg per day

vitamin D

  • is commonly used for the prevention of osteoporosis, muscle weakness, arthritis, ricket, and other disorders
  • This is probably safe in a wide range of doses. In cases of osteopenia (weak bones) and patients with low levels of vitamin D, which can be used to prevent or treat osteoporosis.

Vitamin E

  • Used to heart health, enlarged prostate, skin health, Alzheimer's disease and other disorders
  • considered safe when used topically or orally in doses not exceeding 1000 mg per day

magnesium

  • used for low levels magnesium, laxative, chest pain, heart health and other disorders
  • considered safe when used orally in proper doses and not more than 350 mg per day

potassium

  • used for low potassium levels, high blood pressure, heart problems and other disorders
  • considered safe when used in amounts up to 80-90 mEq day, but because it can affect your heart, I would recommend first speak to a pharmacist or primary care physician

Zinc

  • commonly used to treat and prevent the common cold, asthma, arthritis and other disorders
  • considered safe when used orally and no more than 40 mg / day use. It is known to be beneficial in preventing a cold when the first signs of symptoms are noticed.

Conclusion

There are many so-called indications of vitamins / supplements and while some have very good evidence to support their use many do not. Besides that, many of them are not regulated by the FDA so that manufacturers can put whatever they would like their products without anyone checking. In addition, most people who consume a more or less balanced diet get enough of these vitamins through food sources so they take extra supplements would have almost no benefit, but it would increase their costs.

If they had good evidence, there are still situations where you need to be aware of how they interact with other medicines. Take using Prilosec (omeprazole) and calcium as an example. Two different calcium supplied in the market, calcium citrate and calcium carbonate. Calcium citrate does not need any type of acid to be absorbed into the body, where calcium carbonate needs acid so it is usually taken after a meal. Prilosec reduces the amount of acid the stomach to reduce heartburn or acid reflux. As a result, when using calcium carbonate with Prilosec, almost no benefit is obtained. For this reason I always recommend calcium citrate for patients in Prilosec. That is why I think it's so important to ask your health care or pharmacist about using supplements of vitamins /.

For these reasons mentioned above, generally do not recommend vitamin supplements unless you have a problem diagnosed as low bone density. We know that vitamins are good for you, but many vitamin supplements have not shown significant efficacy in many scientific studies. There is little indication of where they have been beneficial and therefore choose what to buy can be confusing. If you have any questions or concerns, please comment below or email!
