as guest today comes from Ottawa-based labor lawyer Sean Bawden. After standing for not see anything of bottled water (but lots of chocolate with bottled milk) at the recent weekend races Ottawa, he wrote again to point out that perhaps in part because we have supply of bottled water so vilipendiada. He also wondered why it is that not defame other bottled beverages in the same way. Of course, sugar is on the radar with them, but the environment? Not that much. I asked if he would be interested in fleshing out his thoughts and he kindly agreed.
Why me (stupid) stopped buying bottled water
Sean P. Bawden
Occasionally I will be in somewhere far from my home or office, in need of a drink without a reusable container. The most common example occurrence was when previously taught at the University of Algonquin. I would go to college to deliver two hours or three hours of lecture and wanted something wet to get through it.
did not need anything more than just water. For both credit Algonquin and mine, I adopt the practice of carrying a water bottle stainless steel, which could easily fill on campus - but there were times when I forgot the bottle, either at home or office and I had to buy either a single-use, disposable container or go without, until I got home.
On those occasions when I elected to buy something, I have not bought a single bottle of water; I bought something else. Part of the reason for buying something other than water was the social stigma associated with buying bottled water. Bottled water is seen as wasteful and unnecessary (See this video as an example); a stigma that did not seem to fit into a similar disposable bottle if filled with something other than water. Peer pressure can be intense and yet be the teacher and therefore "in charge" did not want to feel judged by my students.
Upon reflection this decision was stupid. A plastic bottle is a plastic bottle; environmental concerns and objections to the use of such containers should be applied equally, regardless of the contents of the container.
More to the point, all I really needed was water - which is the main ingredient in all other options. So why did I buy something full of sugar or some kind of alternative? In part, I think, because I've been socialized to believe that buying bottled water is wrong.
I wish to be clear, there is no reason or excuse for buying bottled water to consume where you have access to both a reusable container and municipal world class facilities, as we do in Ottawa. However, once they had committed to purchasing single-use, disposable beverage containers, water should be a socially acceptable option in the same way all other drinks are seen.
Despite being once a student of environmental legislation can not say I remember ever seeing a campaign against the use of reusable packaging general use; only bottled water specifically.
This stigma has to end for reasons of public health. Water and nothing but water is often all you need. On those occasions when one is ' forced ' for the purchase of a beverage container for single use, which has the simple and plain water as its content should not be viewed negatively.
