Nutrition Tips: What about your diet experts say
health and nutrition is an evolving science. People are always researching, studying and looking for the most complete information about how our bodies work and what keeps us healthy. This means that from time to time, new information will change the rules and make us reevaluate nutrition advice we give. Last year, a panel of experts put their heads together and came up with some nutrition tips regarding our diet based on new research. This is what they had to say:
Okay eating foods rich in cholesterol ... In moderation. From the beginning, recommendations about cholesterol based on the assumption that foods rich in cholesterol (like eggs and shrimp) may cause high cholesterol were made. This myth has been debunked , and experts officially dropped the restrictions. The recommendation is not to eat excessive amounts and avoid foods that are high in cholesterol and saturated fat.
should continue watching your salt intake, but taking nutritional advice with a grain of salt. The recommended daily intake of sodium is 2300mg. The average American gets 3,436mg per day. Most of this excess is due to eating processed foods: 3,436mg 77% of which comes from processed and refined sources. Cut out fast food and processed foods will eliminate much of the excess sodium in your diet. Furthermore, recent studies have questioned the claims about the negative impact salt in our health . What is definitely true is that a salt deficiency is certainly dangerous. So what is the point? Staying within a healthy range not to over-doing the salt, but not under-do it either. The recommendation is to get at least 1,500 mg of sodium per day and a maximum of 2300mg.
Fat is not something to be avoided, whenever healthy fat. The '80s gave birth to many health trends that have since been proven false, and one of them is the idea that foods high in fat will make you fat. There is still room for debate on whether saturated fats are healthy or not, but there is increasing evidence that might not be as bad as made us think. The main point is to get your high-quality fats, natural sources such as fish, nuts, olive oil, and natural animal sources. What we want to avoid is something highly processed. The recommendation is to focus on eating high quality unsaturated fats instead of saturated fats.
Your focus should be on eating habits, not just individual nutrients. Yes, you probably need to eat more omega-3. Yes, you need to limit salt intake. Yes, you need to eat more protein. But what is more important than any of these nutrition advice is to take a holistic approach. In other words, find an eating pattern that will help you eat better in all areas instead of picking up a few small areas of focus. Examples of healthy eating patterns include the Mediterranean or Paleo diet. The recommendation is to choose healthy eating patterns rather than focusing on a small area of your diet.
Most importantly, need to reduce the amount of sugar you eat This is the point everyone agrees with all areas :. Americans eat too much sugar . The average is somewhere between 22 and 30 teaspoons a day - the equivalent of between 352 and 480 calories, or nearly 25% of your daily calories! Most of this comes from added sugar sweet drinks like soda and juice . Simply by eliminating drinks and processed foods, you can pretty easily cut down on the sugar. The recommendation is to get no more than 10% of their daily calories from sugar, which comes out to about 12 teaspoons per day or 200 calories.
Generally, the most notable changes were the much more stringent recommendations on sugar and less strict regulations on cholesterol and salt. Complete removal is not necessary, but too much is not the answer, either. As is the case with many things in life, the key to success following this nutritional advice is moderation.
