Zookeepers killed in Chile two African lions Saturday to protect a man who entered his enclosure .

Man stripped jumped into the pen and began to mock the male and female big cats, The Guardian reported.

Zookeepers first turned a hose in animals , who had attacked the intruder instinctively. They then fired a tranquilizer dart, but lost the lions and instead hit the man, identified by local media as 20-year-old Luis Franco Ferrada, in the neck.

As was being mutilated Ferrada, a zookeeper lions shot with live ammunition. They died shortly afterwards. Ferrada was rushed to a local health center, where was in critical condition .

Santiago told police that left what is believed to be a suicide note. "We're comparing with other writing samples []," said Deputy Commander Gerson Sepulveda.

Critics took to social networks to complain about the handling of the incident, with many condemning the zoo to kill the lions.

But zoo director Alejandra Montalva defended the actions of his staff , saying they had followed the "protocol established" to deal with such circumstances.

" When a person's life is at risk , you have to sacrifice animals," he said. "The shooter decided to save the life of the person and unfortunately had to sacrifice two members of our family."

A vigil was held for the dead lions, who had been resident at the zoo for more than 20 years, near its venue on Saturday night.
