5 Ways to improve your family's health
grow, my family never gave much credit to a super-healthy lifestyle. Whole Foods was not in all major cities, and most of our food choices were just good southern Louisiana Cajun dishes. The terms "gluten", "hydrogenated oils" and even "organic" were not mentioned in our home. If you wanted to get organic "whole foods", I had to go to a vitamin store that had a shelf six feet with very few options. All this changed when I was 14 years old.
At this age, my mother was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. Needless to say, this battle began a fast to a style of much needed family health life path. We abandon pesticides, white bread and sugar, and mother supported in this new change of life (well, I did it reluctantly, but still did). We made regular trips to the vitamin store and we made a point to stay active and eat healthy.
The truth is that for us, it took a tragedy to propel us in life that should already have been living. But it does not have for you, whether you're the mom, dad, or one of the children. If you have the will and the knowledge to set the bar, you are doing it.
Here are some ideas to make positive changes. Disclaimer: This is for a challenge! The easiest way is rarely the best way. Also keep in mind that these tips are to be taken generally. The idea is to create an environment in mind health, not abs for the whole family.
1. Check the environment
One of the keys to self-control is the elimination of the temptations of their environment. If Oreos are your weakness, just not having them around, or buy very infrequently as a gift, in smaller amounts. Which means less temptation to be less harmful. It's as simple as that! 2. Make the healthy shopping options
Your healthy environment is due to many other options. The top of the list: Make sure to make healthy purchases when you are in the market. Adhere to the shopping list and do not shop when you're hungry! Let your brain make the decision for you, not your cravings.
3. Educate those around you
is easier to get on board with change if you understand it, especially when dealing with children who question or set-in-su- adult way so be sure to share the why behind their healthy choices. Every decision has a benefit or five! If you highlight those, and his family is able to recognize and begin to experience them, it is more likely to make decisions that will last.
4. Stop Sitting and move
Does this need an explanation? I hope not. Turn off the TV, take the phone away and get fit! We have all become too sedentary, and we have to make a conscious effort to add more movement today.
5. Treat Yo Self!
Remember, the goal is to create a generally health conscious environment, not a family picture perfect! Treat yourself and love your life! Just do unhealthy things in moderation.
Finally, if you were wondering, my mother lost that battle two years later. And although he lost his life lifestyle still remained. Two of his sons, myself included, have a career in the fitness industry, and the rest of us, maintain active lifestyles and healthy life. We have even gotten through endless annoying to bother our father to stay healthy. This is where family health begins. It starts with you. Start with anyone willing to make a difference and control their environment, and extends to others in the area.
