Family history major predictor of heart attacks in people with psoriasis
July 1, 2016: People with psoriasis, a disease chronic inflammatory, are more likely to suffer heart attacks and strokes when they have a family history of cardiovascular problems, a Danish study suggests
.psoriasis is not associated with an increased risk of heart attacks or strokes when people with the skin disease did not have a family history of cardiovascular disease, according to the study.
But when people with mild psoriasis and a family history of adverse cardiac events such as heart attacks and strokes compared to psoriasis patients without such a family history, which had a 28 percent higher risk. With severe and family history of heart problems psoriasis, the risk was 62 percent higher.
"It is generally believed that patients with psoriasis have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease due to the inflammatory nature of psoriasis," said lead study author Dr. Alexander Egeberg at the University of Copenhagen.
"While psoriasis itself may still confer an independent cardiovascular risk compared with the general population, our findings suggest that there may be a genetic predisposition for cardiovascular disease," said Egeberg by email.
to assess the relationship between psoriasis and a family history of heart disease, Egeberg and colleagues reviewed data 1997-2011 Danes in more than 2.7 million people, including nearly 27,000 individuals with mild psoriasis and 4,500 with severe psoriasis.
At baseline, people were about 27 years old on average.
Approximately two thirds of people with psoriasis in the study had a family history of cardiovascular disease, which was slightly more common than severe psoriasis with mild psoriasis.
Without a family history of heart disease, the rate of adverse cardiac events was 1.3 per 10,000 persons per year among those without psoriasis. That compared with 1.85 cases per 10,000 persons per year with mild psoriasis and about 6 per 10,000 with severe psoriasis.
But when the researchers adjusted for other factors that could influence the chances of heart attacks and strokes, no longer found a difference between people with psoriasis and the general population, when there was no family history of disease cardiovascular.
