How gym strengthened my friendship as much as my body
In college, I met one of my best friends, Olivia. We bonded over our weird sense of humor, affinity for donuts and desserts of all kinds, Harry Potter, and a number of other common elements. Beyond that, only "they got" each other, and there was an instant confidence, appreciation and love from day one.
Post-graduation, after years of alcohol and too many night to Del Taco and Panda Express visits, decided to be "healthy". This began with attempts to "run" up and down the promenade of Manhattan Beach. . . which he ended up being occasional walks, as none of us had worked, and running more than about 11 steps was - for all purposes -. impossible
A couple of years passed before we started actually dabbling in fitness. None of us had ever been in a gym, it has been running real, or really taken a class group fitness consistent. All that began to change a couple of years ago. I started running (not an easy start, really), and Olivia started going to indoor cycling classes. Last year, Olivia introduced me to SoulCycle, which is now one of my favorite workouts.
Because we started this journey together, we are making progress together and discover things at the same time. By sharing our new favorite workouts, healthy recipes and recovery tips, it's like being in school again. We have the opportunity to share moments of triumph (my first half marathon, his first headstand), but also the hardest moments.
Moving away from her San Francisco this year was hard because I put so many miles between us. But our new love fitness has created a new dynamic and layer of our friendship and made our relationship even stronger. Better yet, we're both better people in the process. It's almost as if my virtual training partner; she is the first person text when I had a great instructor or try a new class, and she's always telling me about the new studies that are emerging in LA (as Rise Nation or Lagree method ).
This past weekend, Olivia took me at Kayla Itsines Bootcamp in LA , where we witnessed a similar link between so many women. Fitness is a very personal journey, and when that vulnerable part of his life is shared with someone close to you, that really strengthens your relationship and close.
Beyond the sappy, I like to teach Olivia how buy healthy staples pantry like quinoa and chia seeds as much as I love receiving the "I'm so sweaty just got out of the craziest class yoga "texts. Constantly talk about our favorite sports clothing (such as Voices outdoors Alo Yoga , and all the beautiful things in SoulCycle), and do milk gold bedtime in our sleepovers now.
While parts of our relationship have remained the same (mainly weird sense of humor), both have grown and become better people, and we did it together. It feels pretty amazing to have someone who started her fitness journey, at the same time I did, and someone to turn to for strength and inspiration. Our bodies definitely have become stronger and more toned, but our friendship is even stronger.
