My pregnancy! It was hard. In the first three months, the morning sickness was unbearable and could not even take a bus without vomiting. It was all day with nausea and vomiting early in the morning and evening. I lost weight and looked pale and sickly. Finally it cooled off at four months and thankfully the rest of the months were fine. So after the bad start, I had no idea that another slump is coming! My baby, Kendrick was born premature at 30 weeks. If 30 weeks!
Baby Kendrick is three and a half months now. When I think about where we have come, three and half months is a miracle. I love this guy. Actually - when fast forward into the future and see my little man growing up, I would want to know that my love for him will always be constant. Times change, life changes, but my love will never waver because she loved him even before seeing it.
all started one Sunday when I had visited my mother to spend time with after church family. When I was about to leave, I felt a little moisture. I did not pay much attention until the moisture increased. At check in, I realized I was downloading a lot of water. I asked Mom if this was normal since I was 26 weeks pregnant at the time.
I was worried, but I was told to watch and let you know. I got home and water keeps coming and had begun to seep into my dress well. I called my mother and went to the nearby clinic where they checked if my cervix had dilated. They confirmed that my cervix was still closed, but my water had broken. I was given some drugs to stop the work. I returned home, but the problem persisted. He had planned to give birth at the Mbagathi Hospital so the next morning, my brother took me there. I was told to do a scan and indicated that he had severe oligohydramnios. The doctor recommended that I be admitted immediately. The doctors consulted and decided that the best option was to buy time until at least arrived at 36 weeks. In his calculations, he had to remain in the hospital for almost 3 months.
This plan however did not work and continued water out until one day when I went to an analysis at 30 weeks, he showed that there were 2 cm dilated and the amniotic fluid was zero. That's when they took me to the theater and got my precious baby. You see, I really never got to know the work did an emergency caesarean section. I wonder what would have ben and i would really love to know how you feel. Work is normal. During my stay in hospital I saw many women in labor, and I learned that all birth stories is unique.
After the birth of Kendrick at 30 weeks, which were taken to Kenyatta National Hospital from Mbagathi did not have the facilities required. I could not breathe; his lungs were not well developed. So for a month, then every three hours, I'd go upstairs to where he was, watching carefully to my caesarean wound to feed Kendrick. Each day had its challenges. At first, he was on oxygen for a week. I could not do without it. Then, after two days of life, he had jaundice, which was persistent and remained in phototherapy for a week. That was difficult for me and his eyes were covered and they could not see. He cried trying to remove the cover on his face. Thirdly, he was unable to breastfeed so I would like to express milk and feed him with a tube. Having one resident baby in the hospital nursery makes one have jitters every day. Unfortunately some babies do not over and die, and there are times I'm afraid to go there because I knew what to expect ...
fortunately we were discharged, and unlike normal discharges baby , we needed special care. Kendrick had to keep warm throughout. This was quite difficult considering it was cold and raining at the time. He had to make sure he took his formula, vitamins and medicine body builder. I am grateful for my mother, and we went to her house and she has helped a lot with the baby. We also had to keep doing the KMC until she was three months. I loved these moments that we would have binding skin to skin. (Currently it is too large to fit well in my chest plus you can not sit still, you want to see everything and what he has in his chest has scratched him and try to stand)
Like first time mom, this experience was very difficult and I have learned that when a mother to make sacrifices. I stayed in the hospital for two months for the sake of my son. I have also learned to appreciate life. Never take for granted. I remember women in the Hospital would say, "mtoto if Nguo utaomba MTU" (A child is not the clothes, you can borrow from someone else). I have to know who my friends were and that made me be a better person to my family and friends. I found that motherhood comes with its own challenges, and we must adapt. People who have been there before know me better and so I am always willing to listen and get to use what is applicable to my child and what is not. Each child is different.
Challenges? Yes, we've had some scary moments in the past where Kendrick could not breathe, his nose block. That was awful and always guarantees someone to watch over him, and we had Nasaline drops in the house. We are fortunately beyond that. I also searched in Google and saw that happens mostly to children who are born by Caesarean section. Another challenge has been so persistent cold came when he was still in the nursery. It comes and goes, but the doctor says it's normal. The challenge of milk has also pursued us. Even with eating and drinking plenty of fluids, I just do not seem to have enough milk for my son. Therefore, I had to make a difficult decision and put it in milk formula after consultation with the doctor. He is doing quite well, though. I am grateful for that.
Challenges aside, I love what Kendrick is quiet. She loves to bathe and get your massage. It's funny how every time your massage her grandmother, who is usually busy watching television while smiling, however, my two year old niece always put to mourn over the same massage. It has also put on weight, and from three months ago are now in 1.43Kgs 4.5kgs. I love smiling, laughing and throwing her arms and legs. He is a happy baby.
The support of my family has been amazing. They all love him. I am a single mother and while in the hospital for two months, my mother my stuff back to their place moved. Now we are all in the same place and it is close enough to the members of my family. He is surrounded by guys who love him. It also has great grandparents who really love. Some mothers say they spoil him forever wearing it when awake or crying, but seriously growing too fast and soon not want to be cuddled.
My mothers message is that we should never judge others. Children are different and every mother has the interest of your child at heart. While in the hospital some women that motherhood would be like a competition, and do other mothers feel bad - as if it was not good enough for her son. In the same spirit also mothers should be open to learning. Learning to sift through the information received from the other mothers and realize that not everything is good and everything is not bad too. Just choose what works for you.
My Kendrick is indeed a miracle. I would encourage all mothers out there who have been through risk pregnancies to hang in there and take each day as it comes with the support of the family and those you love. Kendrick that comes into our lives has made our lives much more worthwhile.
