Dana Point, California (AP) -. Rescuers in southern California failed to release a blue whale from a life-threatening tangle of fishing line but they will keep trying - if they can find it again.

70 feet long mammal was discovered Monday off Dana Point, about 50 miles south of Los Angeles.

David Anderson says he and others tried for hours to remove an estimated 200 feet from the thin line of a crab pot that was tangled either around a fin or mouth of the whale.

However, repeated efforts with a pole 30 feet long knife tip failed. The whale finally sank out of sight, shortly before nightfall.

Anderson, who owns a business in whale watching Orange County, says its ships will be looking for the whale Tuesday and hopes other boaters will be, too.

Anderson says unless the line is removed, the whale will eventually become fatally exhausted.
