FODMAP is an acronym for:

Fermentable
Oligosaccharides
Disaccharides
Monosaccharides
And
Polyols

These carbohydrates short chain naturally found in many of food we eat. These particular types of carbohydrates share three important characteristics: they are poorly absorbed in the gut, attract additional water in the intestine and are rapidly fermented by bacteria in the gut. Depending on the amount consumed and tolerance of an individual, FODMAPs can lead to increased gas, bloating, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Before starting any new diet, consult a medical professional to rule out celiac disease cancer and allergies or food intolerances. If FODMAP prescribed diet, working with a dietitian registered dietitian is especially important.

Four types of FODMAPs

  • oligosaccharides
There are two different groups of oligosaccharide: fructan and galactans. Fructans are found in wheat products, onion, garlic , artichokes and inulin. Galactanes found in lentils, chickpeas, beans, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and soy-based products.
  • Disaccharides
The most commonly known disaccharide is lactose. Milk, yogurt, soft cheeses, ice cream and desserts are all disaccharide containing lactose.
  • The monosaccharides
Fructose is a monosaccharide found in fruit . absorption of fructose is higher when combined with sources of glucose, other sugar. Therefore, when it is FODMAPs, not all fruits are equal. The containing equal amounts of fructose and glucose can be tolerated more easily. Examples of foods containing high-fructose-that can cause gastrointestinal symptoms include (but are not limited to) agave, honey, mango, watermelon, sugar snap peas and high fructose corn syrup.
  • Polyols
Polyols are sugar alcohols found in some stone fruits (such as cherries and nectarines), apples and pears; in vegetables such as mushrooms and cauliflower; and in some sugar substitutes containing xylitol or sorbitol.

How the diet low in FODMAP can run

This diet begins with a FODMAP period low, usually ranging from six to eight weeks. Then, under the observation of a medical professional, a patient will gradually reintroducing certain foods containing FODMAP. During the period of reintroduction, it is vital to keep track of the signs and symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort in order to help identify offenders of food.

Reintroduction is important because too much restriction can cause damage as well. Cut too many fruits, vegetables, vegetable protein and dairy products from the diet can lead to an increased risk of deficiencies of nutrients such as fiber, minerals like calcium, protein (for vegetarians or vegans) and vitamins A, C and D.

a dietitian registered dietitian can help control the phase of reintroduction by developing an eating plan that meets the nutritional needs of an individual. Remember, this is a under diet FODMAP is not not FODMAP diet. It is a highly individualized therapy that was designed to help control the symptoms, not cure completely.
