June 15 of, 2016 : what is search online you can certainly tell a lot about you. And now, researchers say their online habits can actually detect early signs of cancer.
Internet browsing and signs of cancer
The study was published in Journal of Oncology Practice . Then Microsoft researchers showed that web searches can be used in specific circumstances to predict a future diagnosis of pancreatic cancer with the help of data collected in the search engine Bing.
By identifying new search queries that suggest pancreatic cancer, researchers worked back to previous searches to inspect the patterns of warning signs regarding what individuals often look for months. Some of the previous search terms are linked to a future diagnosis of pancreatic cancer include yellowing of the skin, dark urine, abdominal swelling and dark stools.
When they met and patterns were analyzed, the researchers were able to recognize between 5 and 15 percent of cases with low rates of false positives.
Robert Grossman of the University of Chicago, who is not involved in the study, believes the research is exciting and a huge step forward. He said the search for low price, low risk and observation systems high health coverage is a major challenge.
However, there are concerns regarding the study results. Alison Patricia Klein, professor of oncology at Johns Hopkins University, for example, warned that there are limitations on how useful using web searches for the early detection of cancer can be.
She said she is concerned that they are being identified and will be in the later stages of the disease, where there are many effective therapies. In addition, the study results may not be enough delegate because low-income patients are no more likely to have access to technology, and therefore will be unable to perform web searches researchers analyzed. Klein thinks this is a dilemma because risk factors can be different in different people.
There is huge potential in the analysis of health data, as there is a greater variety of access points now. In addition to searching the web, people can take advantage of carry data accurate medical records to them. Access to this information is given beyond these researchers, but others also a treasure trove of data that will be used to advance health outcomes for everyone.
