highest court in Austria has annulled the results of presidential elections in the country and ordered a re-do, citing irregularities counting votes.
In the runoff election May leaning to his left, the candidate supported by the Green Party Alexander Van der Bellen defeated his extreme right, the opponent against immigration Norbert Hofer by less than 31,000 votes . As reported , his margin of victory was only 0.6 percent.
This is the "first time something like this has happened in the history of postwar Austria" as NPR's Soraya Sarhaddi Nelson says our newscast unit. Van der Bellen adds that it is supposed to be sworn in on Friday.
Now, Hofer has another chance at victory. If elected, would be "the first right-wing head of state of the European Union", as reported by Reuters.
The Constitutional Court ruled Friday an appeal of the Freedom Party Hofer against the outcome of the election.

"the court says that voting by mail opened ahead of time and in some cases their count was unsupervised, "Kerry Skyring Vienna NPR reported. "It is said that there is no evidence of vote manipulation, but because of the possibility existed, the result should be annulled."
As reported by the BBC , the Freedom Party, "also claimed to have evidence that some had been allowed to vote under age 16 and foreigners."
Hofer strong presence in the second round May was seen as an indication of the growing power of the extreme right, ultra-nationalist parties in Europe.
Van der Bellen, is a strong supporter of the EU. As reported by the BBC, which has "spoken of his dream for a free border of the United States of Europe '."
remains to be seen how the decision of the UK leaving the EU will have a new impact voting Austria, this fall is expected. As Reuters reports, "the referendum could buoy populist sentiment or have a negative effect on him."
Until Austria has a new election, as reported Soraya, "the presidency is in charge of three parliamentary leaders, one of whom Hofer."
