Many people are using artificial sweeteners for different purposes. One concern they have is :? Artificial sweeteners are safe
Are artificial sweeteners safe
The discovery of artificial sweeteners was an accident. During a research laboratory of a scientist she discovered that a chemical tested by accident and found it was very sweet. And this led to the development of artificial sweeteners. Since then, different types of these have been used by people to enjoy the sweetness and as a tool for weight control (although the benefits of artificial sweeteners for weight loss are controversial and some research suggests that these actually cause weight gain in the long run).
Some of the most commonly known artificial sweeteners are aspartame (Nutrasweet and Equal), saccharin (SugarTwin, Sweet N 'Low) and sucralose (Splenda).
Saccharin is safe?
One of the most common criticisms about the safety of artificial sweeteners is that they cause cancer. Saccharin, the most popular of artificial sweeteners was almost banned after laboratory studies in rats indicated that caused bladder cancer, skin, etc. However, no human studies have concluded that the use of saccharin causes or increases the risk of cancer. And even in laboratory studies, the risk of cancer is increased only in male rats.
According to the National Cancer Institute of the United States, none of the approved artificial sweeteners has been linked to cancer in humans. So the answer to the question: Are artificial sweeteners safe for humans is that yes they are therefore relates to cancer. And no other significant health problems have been identified or associated with artificial sweeteners.
Sucralose Safe?
Similarly studies in rats have linked sucralose different diseases such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome and heart disease. At first it was thought that sucralose is not digested by the body and excreted out without becoming part of the body. However, recent research has concluded that it is actually metabolized by the body and can be potentially linked to the following problems:
- is altered and affect the good bacteria found in the human digestive system
- limits the absorption of drugs for heart disease and cancer and therefore decreases the effectiveness of drugs
- When used in baking, decomposes and releases a toxin called chloroproanols.
- may also alter insulin responses, genes and can also cause inflammation of the intestines.
However, note that the above is based on research in rats and that is not a true indication of the effects on humans. At least obtainable safer teeth with artificial sweeteners, due to lack of sugar consumption.
In short, there is no real scientific evidence has concluded that artificial sweeteners are not safe for humans. However, the best method is to use real sugar in moderation.
