"I'm too old to get fit?"
I bet I'm the oldest member of your community! "
" I'm too old for this? I do not understand all the references. "
We have these kinds of emails a few times a week.
If you have ever took a Danny Glover and said, "I'm getting too old for this sh **," you're not alone But you know we have members Kick ass Rebellion who are in their 70s, 80s, and 90s. [?
Yes.
Did you know that you're never too old to start? Yes.
When 2014 champion Boston marathon Meb Keflezighi when asked how long he thought he could still compete at an elite level and is now over the age of 40, he replied: "If no one told you when you were born, how do you know how old you are? "
Tamae Watanabe of Japan reached the summit of Mount Everest at the age of 73, 10 years after setting the previous record in 63! I met many rebels over the age of 70, including Gay New Mexico is 73, has nine grandchildren, and I lost 90 pounds on the trip
believe it or not, we have emails of 30 years who explain why they are too old - the way it's too late so they can get in shape, learn a trade, travel the world, etc.
the problem is - if you are 30 or 80 - you think you are too old you are too old . This belief that is too tight in their ways of change becomes paralyzing.
Those who subscribe to the belief that they are "too old" to see the person who declares "age is just a way of thinking "or" never too old to change "as a naive or foolish statement. "They do not understand. When you are my age / in my situation, they'll get it."
And it is hard to see the other side if you believe this yourself. Really freakin 'hard. The belief has become so it hardened that not even be realistic imagine himself changing. But I have seen thousands and thousands of people in the NF Rebellion change your mindset after trying to themselves that can change.
that is, if Willie Murphy , this old granny 78 years, can feed elevator, there is probably something that you are able to as well. Oh, and by the way, and she began your fitness journey 56!
Breaking the wall: "I can not because ___" is a difficult task that's why today we will leave our rebel veterans speak for us If you have health problems to avoid, lose weight, habits to build or.. enemies to prove him wrong, we will be inspired by some bad-ass Rebel who have already walked the path.
wanted to share some stories of some of our veterans rebels there to let you know that no matter how old you are or how far you have to go on your fitness journey, starting today is the best gift you can give yourself.
Spotlight Rebel: Joni
Steve: Hey Joni, great meeting that year past Camp Nerd Fitness . To start, tell us a little about yourself.
First and foremost I am a mother and grandmother. I have been divorced for a very long time (21 years) and raised my daughter by myself mostly. She has grown to 35 now with a husband, and grandson have the most perfect in the world. He is the April 6 and joy of my life. Oh, and I'm CTO of a company managed small services.
Steve: What is your training in the gym? When you started?
Haha ... no background in fitness. I mean, literally, no. I was about 220 after my divorce that put that weight for years. I would go to a gym, get a coach who would drag me around cardiovascular equipment and make me hit the ground with ropes and left me great.
I hated it with a passion.
In 2009 I lost 60 pounds on Medifast for basically eating about 1000 calories a day. I dropped to 160 then quickly went back to 185 when the actual food was introduced. A couple of years ago, literally searched "fitness for Nerds" on Google and even appeared fitness nerd!
Steve: Congrats to eventually find your way! What inspired you to start?
20 seconds value has changed my life. Actually Staci history inspired me. I am brave in the professional field, but not as much as the staff. 20 seconds value put me in a crossfit class. Crossfit hated, but loved the weights. I was hooked!
finally I found a coach who agreed to train to raise and the rest is history.
As a note I went through a whole list of coaches who thought I was too old, too fat, too all sorts of things before finding one that would train me to the elevator. 8th Feb, 2015 represented the first session with my current coach so it's really only been a little over a year. In the last year, with 20 seconds left and again, I made 33 stairclimb soil for the association of lung, an obstacle course mud 30, a run of 5 km and a Push / Pull gather at the fair state, and Field Nerd Fitness . What a wonderful, fun, scary year this has been.
Steve: This makes me so happy going crazy. So, what is your routine look like now?
I'm leaning out (my coach is a bodybuilder, that's their term), so all my food is prepared weekends. I eat about 2300 calories a day and I'm dropping one or two pounds a week. 5 days a week I'm at the gym around 5:15.
I'm doing Powerlifting Program Juggernaut and really enjoying the process although I have much to learn. I'm so excited, I'm going to a fitness clinic full day of May! Are looks imagine when the old, gray hair goes wide? There is no way that would have happened two years ago.
I firmly believe in the discipline instead of motivation . I am not in any way motivated to crawl out of bed at 4:45 in the morning to go to the gym, but I'm sure I feel good when I come home after a workout. Two days a week they have a type of yoga come to my house and help me with mobility. My hips are very tight and I had an injury and I'm trying to avoid another.
On my days off to do a kind of dog with some friends and our various puppies. We agility, obedience and tricks. On Sunday, weather permitting, will practice hunting with SCA. That is a whole another 20 seconds in the history of courage.
And between 8 and 5 that work. Retirement in a few years I hope! It is 8:10 now so it's almost bedtime. It is tomorrow Deadweight and I can not wait!
Steve: Joni Dang, you have inspired me now. Looking back, after all those years in the "roller coaster", what do you think was what made the success this time?
Nerd Fitness is important! This community is as safe and powerful. If there had been a Nerd gym when he was 20, he would have lived a very different life, I think. I have not seen the guys wrestling park, I would have approached and asked if he could play too. I would have walked to the back of the gym and learned to lift rather than see the guys from the corner of his eye as he walked on the tape. I would have stopped worrying about what people think, 40 years ago.
I am sure that this is the first community or tribe that many of us have experienced. We fit here.
Steve: I told you this in the camp, but it made me mourn when you told me your story. In a good way. So, thanks for being such an impressive example of what is possible Joni! And last but not least, do you have any hobbies or interests nerd?
Well, I'm learning how to make chain mail armor. It goes very slow but it's fun. I'm also learning to fight with sword and shield in SCA. The activity of wine Camp and Dakao Do . WOW hours used to play every day, but it is not a priority now canceled my subscription.
Rebel Spotlight: Jim
Steve: Jim, thanks for being awesome and talk to us. Tell us a little about yourself:
I'm a 56 years old father of five, grandfather of 6. I am a Senior Solution Architect for Red Hat. Translation: I'm technical sales engineer. I work with sales representatives from several ensuring that sell to our customers appropriate software. I am in favor of the accounts that are based in Florida. Or as one of my friends say, I learn all you can about technology and travel around the country talking about it, when he first met and Steve (in Nashville!).
Steve: Yes! And now I feel like I see you more often I see some of my other friends! Let's see ... when you start working with fitness?
That's a difficult question to answer. I grew up on a farm and played sports through high school. This was followed by marriage and children. During my 20 and 30, most of my exercise came from my work, or activities such as firewood division, remodeling homes, playing basketball disk, etc.
I got back in the gym in my mid-40s from the typical operating exercises and dumbbells.
Steve: More recently, there was a specific time when it was decided to make a change? What inspired you to start?
really get to a place in my life where I had the time and money for a gym membership, etc. I wanted to get stronger and be in good shape. At some point we had a personal trainer and told him I wanted to be able to bench 225 #. Laughed at my. Now, my current bank is 370 pounds. That motivated me a long time to continue working ago.
I found fitness nerd sometime in 2011, and almost at the same time he had a young co-worker who was a powerlifter. I had started doing bar work in the forum. He told me about a competition weightlifting was a mile from my apartment. I registered and was hooked.
Now I'm hooked because "accidentally" the record of the state of Florida by USAPL squat and bench for my age and weight class. This is motivating me to lose some weight so you can drop a class and set two more records.
Steve: Fuck man, what a fantastic example of the use of a challenge as motivation rather than an excuse. And congratulations on the state record !! Screw trainer - sounds like you can lift two of him now. What is your routine like now?
spend about 1/2 of my life working on the road. Whenever I can, I take hotels that are near a gym (with a chain of 24 hours) I am a member. I'd rather go to the gym early in the morning (5 or 6 AM) and training an hour or so. My goal is to go 5 or 6 times a week and a half 4. Just do cardio as heating (rowing machine or jumping rope or calesthentics).
My routine at the gym varies greatly, as they often do not know which team I will have at my disposal. Attempt to hit at least 2 of the main lifts of each workout, plus any accessory material is available.
Steve: Welp, it seems that the rebels who travel frequently have now lost that excuse too. Thank you for busting that one for me. Anything that is not impressive (you struggle with)?
Food is my biggest challenge, especially with the trip. I tend to do very well at breakfast, lunch OK in, and terrible at dinner.
Steve: Any advice for the rebels around age
Check your ego at the door. The key to exercising and getting stronger as you get older is coherence implies not hurt. Every time I start thinking about beating the child who has just come to me ... release the weights and go home.
As a person, I recover and heal slower. I can not allow weeks or months long hiatus in the same way as I could when I was younger. Of course, one advantage I have is to be more aware of my limits because I've been doing and ...
Steve: Play with your strengths and be aware of its limits. Any nerd credibility you want to share?
Technology (especially Linux) is my nerd passion. I realized very early in my life that I have some addictive tendencies, so I've always avoided any kind of computer games. At this stage of my life, I find most fantasy films and science fiction rather boring and repetitive. I live a pretty boring life.
usually have to use Google to understand most challenging issues, gifs and memes in forums Nerd Fitness.
Steve: Ha! Well, good and to stick to it, even if you do not get all the absurd references we put into the content.
Fitness is for everyone. The rebels older. I would love to hear from you
Fitness is not a privilege for young people, is for everyone. Young or old, thin or fat, pink or green (wait, I'm thinking of Power Rangers ).
Age is just another excuse. - Is no different time, money or all the other reasons we find not do what needs to be done
Like many excuses , you may not actually say it out loud, but if we look honestly at ourselves, we can see that we get back. I even have a few pages devoted to crushing "I'm too old to [insert any fun thing you want to do is here]" in my book, level of his life . This is also the reason why the first rule Fitness Nerd Rebellion is as follows: ". We do not care where it comes only when you go" Everything that has brought you here, you're never too old to be better today than yesterday.
Being better today than yesterday is so damn important when it comes to our health, especially as we age. You know the saying "use it or lose it?" The more exercise and stay active, the more alert we are and the less "old" we feel.
At the end, we are all the same: finding a way to be happy and healthy. This is very different for everyone, and our own brains often tell us, we lie: so begins today "I can do nothing.". Do something. Go for a walk. Try yoga. Chat with others suit your age and ask them what they do.
But start.
