No matter how you feel about the weigh-ins, dietitian Julie Upton, MS , RD, of appetite for Health , shares details of a new study on how the scale can help you lose weight.

According to a first of its kind study published in Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics , researchers Program Obesity prevention Duke University reported that those who weighed themselves daily lost about three times as much weight and body fat compared with less frequently trodden scale.

Researchers at Duke obesity enrolled 47 men and women with overweight in a weight loss clinical trial using electronic scales that were networked to the computer network of researchers. All subjects were instructed to intervene in every day and were given some basic tips on diet and exercise healthy behaviors (ie, increase water consumption, walk more, eat less snacks, enjoy more fruit / vegetables).

Using data from escales of subjects, the researchers could track the frequency objectively weighing and actual recorded pesos. Previous studies have relied on information from the subjective perception of the subjects on the weigh-ins, which is considered less reliable.

After six months, researchers evaluated both body weight and composition of all subjects and found that those who weighed daily (51 percent of all subjects) lost an average of 20 pounds, compared to about seven pounds lost among themselves weighing about five days a week. Subjects who weighed themselves daily were also more likely to report behaviors following through diet and healthier life style.

The authors concluded: "Daily weighing can trigger self-regulatory processes that promote behavioral change which weighed daily report higher adoption of diet and exercise behaviors associated with weight control .."

This study adds to previous studies that also reported that weighing more frequently lose more weight and are less likely to gain weight with weather. As a nutritionist, I have always been reluctant to recommend obsessed with the number on the scale, but more recent studies suggest that it is important to keep a check on your body weight so you can alter behavior when a small increase observed in weight gain. It is much easier to lose three to five pounds of what it is to lose 20 or more, so frequent weigh-ins are a way to keep your stable weight for life.
