3 Reasons Why MUST not plant these vegetables Along
This weekend I had a very interesting journey. I decided to put my old grandmother`s house in order and get a weekend getaway. This healthy lifestyle has really grown on me and once I think of my old habits, I don`t want to go back.
This weekend, next on my list, was taking care of the small garden behind the house. I was so excited, my list had numerous plants, but didn`t even realize that there are some "rules" to follow a policy that we must respect.
Don`t mix potatoes and tomatoes
I never thought I was going to use this phrase literally. A neighbor was kind enough to explain that despite my garden is small and not so wide that had to be very careful about how I organize my garden. Seriously!?
There was a bit of rulebook on how to grow my garden? I needed to dig a little deeper before making a big mistake and ruin my entire garden. My little garden needs special attention, because `t have all the space in the world, and somehow all plants which happens to be planted near or next to each other. I found a book Duane Newcomb, called "Plant Factory backyard", which explains and answers all the questions that some may doubt, like why some plants don`t make good neighbors, what is the reason that and how we can help ourselves and ease of our gardening process.
Why some plants don`t make good neighbors?
According to the book Duane`s, everything can be explained by science, but experience and experiments can also produce good results. So what do we do? Take the size of your garden 'into consideration, make a list of the plants you want to have in your garden and start to try and experiment with your plants. Don`t be discouraged if something doesn`t survive, plants require a lot of love and patience.
After a while, become an expert on the subject that plants make great neighbors, that make good neighbors and which "kill" each other. But before mastering your garden, here are some facts you need to know in order to avoid total disaster in your garden.
1.Watch out in the pH level of the soil: although it sounds complicated, this activity is actually quite easy and simple to do. Today, we have many tools and devices that will make your life easier and testers pH are one of them (see this mooncity useful and practical tool 3-in-1 soil moisture, light and pH / acidity tester plant meter, Good for the gardener or flower pot indoor and outdoor (no battery needed).
Due to the presence of certain compounds in plants as potassium and nitrogen, some plants can interfere and stop the growth of other plants. for example, some plants require shrubby plants, others make great neighbors around the world and some plants are co-dependent on each other. spinach is a neighbor, you can plant next to what you want and the plant will continue to grow healthily.
for cucumbers, potatoes are the worst enemies, but lettuce , bush beans and radishes are well suited. Cabbage, cucumber, beans, cauliflower, beets, carrots, strawberries and corn along perfectly, as long as it is planted away from leeks, onions, shallots and garlic. Feel free to combine onions with peppers, tomatoes, carrots, eggplant and parsley, but never combined with kohlrabi. Onions are not combined with beans, peas and asparagus, cabbage, or combined with lettuce.
2. Some plants are affected by the same or common bacterial or fungal, for the same pest parasites and infections. Always be careful about the combinations you make in your garden and keep in mind that due to fungal infection, corn and tomatoes are always plants separately, so if one of your plant is affected by the infection, which won`t harm the other plant. This rule also applies in tomatoes and potatoes and potatoes and peppers, which should always be at different ends of the garden.
3. sun factor: some plants are sun lovers and another will be just fine in the shade. Take this factor into account, especially if you do not have enough land to work. Plants grow tall, they can affect shrubby plants, smaller and that will affect their growth. For example, you can plant pumpkins and corn together, because both plants are related in their growth, plants require sunlight in its early growth, however, once fully mature, pumpkins shadow that creates the corn will fully benefit.
Plants don`t grow together
Tomatoes and potatoes: although these plants they belong to the same family who just can`t grows well next to each other. When planted together, the potato loses its ability to fend off blight. This infection spreads very fast and can even be transferred to the neighboring gardens. In order to avoid a catastrophe like this, plant the vegetables separately.
- Cauliflower et al: The reason these plants grow together `t is similar to potatoes and tomatoes. They are infected by something known as the hernia. This disease as you can guess, affects the roots and the plants are unable to absorb water and the only cure is to remove plant roots and all. The same is true with tomatoes and radish.
- Beans, peas and onions: If you want to have all three types of plants in your garden, try planting a row of beans, followed by a row of cabbage, then the row of onions, a row of lettuce, radish a row and a row of peas. This way your plants flourish.
-other plants known mutually interfering
onions and mint interfere asparagus, beans and mustard pole interfere beet, dill and anise interfere carrots and potatoes are the worst neighbors tomatoes, sunflower, pumpkin, cucumber, radish and squash. Strawberries should stay away from the cabbage family.
I hope I helped a little in organizing your garden. Remember, patience and attention can do wonders for your garden!
