in vitro and animal studies conducted by Taiwanese nutritionists at the University of Medicine Taipei suggest that Angelica sinensis - also known as Dong Quai - could be an interesting supplement for both endurance athletes and strength. We rub our hands with glee when we read your article in molecules, although we have some reservations.

Angelica sinensis
Angelica sinensis is a plant that grows in Korea, China and Japan. Traditional healers have used extracts from the dried roots of Angelica sinensis for thousands of years as a remedy for menstrual problems - hence the name "female ginseng" - but also for arthritis, headache and fatigue. Angelica sinensis extracts contain Z-ligistulide and angelicide.

It is not clear to what extent Angelica sinensis has a pseudo-estrogenic effect. Molecular studies have shown that the plant contains none, or almost no substances which are able to bind to estradiol receptor [J Agric Food Chem 2001 May.; 49 (5) :. 2472-9], but animal studies have shown that Angelica sinensis not stimulate the tissues in the uterus. Moreover, the extract LH concentration decreases. [Phytother Res 2006 Aug.; 20 (8): 665-9]

And finally, there are several documented cases of men who have developed breasts after taking Angelica sinensis.. [Singapore Med J. 2001 Mar; 42 (3) :. 115-6]. Male athletes may be better to avoid high doses of Angelica sinensis

And since we're on the subject of the side effects of Angelica sinensis: supplementation can lead to spontaneous abortion and also increases skin sensitivity to the sun

.

Study
researchers gave male mice a daily dose of 0.41 g or 2.05 g Angelica sinensis per kg body weight for six weeks. The human equivalent dose of this, for a woman weighing 70 kg would be about 3 to 15 g of extract per day. The extract was manufactured by Sun Ten Pharmaceutical. [Suntenglobal.com] By the way, the company funded the study. The National Science Council of Taiwan put the money for the study.

The researchers reached their laboratory animals to swim every day. A control group of mice was swimming well, but were not given a supplement containing active ingredients. Another control group not swim and was not given Angelica sinensis either.

Results
At the end of the six weeks, the researchers timed how long the mice were able to swim. They found that supplementation had increased the resilience of the animals. In addition, mice that had been given Angelica sinensis were able to develop grip strength in its talons.

Taiwanese discovered that supplementation alters energy metabolism of the animals. They found that the muscles and liver of mice that had been given Angelica sinensis contain more glycogen than those of other mice.

Researchers also found less lactic acid, ammonia and creatine kinase in the blood of mice that had been given Angelica sinensis. Angelica sinensis not only made more efficient muscles of mice, but also apparently protected muscle damage.

Mechanism
Researchers also hinted that they did in an in vitro study, and found that Angelica sinensis has a muscle-building effect . "Angelica Treatment sinensis could promote hypertrophy in myotubes skeletal cultivated second extract of Astragalus membranaceus, through activation of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) / Akt (also called protein kinase B) / mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR ) pathway, "they wrote.

"Therefore, we hypothesized that supplementation with Angelica sinensis regular aerobic training can have a synergistic effect on improving exercise performance and protection against induced fatigue the exercise."

But ...

sounds good, but supplementation with considerable dose of Angelica sinensis did not lead to increased muscle growth. See the table below. Hmm.

We're not sure what to do with this study. For now we are reserving judgment on Angelica sinensis.
