June 21, 2016: Blisters are small pockets of fluid that usually form in the upper layers of the skin after it has been damaged. Blisters can develop anywhere in the body but are most common in the hands and feet.

The fluid accumulates under the damaged skin, muffling the tissue underneath. This protects the tissue from further damage and allows it to heal. Most blisters are filled with a clear liquid (whey) but may be filled with blood (blood blisters) or pus if inflamed or infected.

Most blisters heal naturally after three to seven days and do not require medical attention.

It is important to avoid breaking the blister, as this could lead to an infection or slow the healing process.

If the blister is not broke, do not remove dead skin. Instead, allow the fluid inside the blister to drain and cover the area with a dry sterile to protect from infection dressing until healed.

See your doctor if you have blisters:

  • believes is infected
  • are very painful
  • keep coming

An infected blister will be full of yellow or green pus and can be painful, red and hot.

is important not to ignore an infected blister, since it could lead to secondary impetigo (a contagious bacterial skin infection) and other complications, such as cellulitis or sepsis.

What causes blisters?

Blisters can be caused by:

  • skin friction
  • heat - for example, sunburn or scald
  • contact with chemicals such as detergent
  • medical conditions such as chickenpox and impetigo

Prevention of blisters

There are a number of things you can do to prevent blisters caused by friction, sunburn or chemicals. For example, you can:

  • Wear comfortable shoes that fit well
  • help keep feet dry with thicker socks or talcum powder
  • Use gloves for handling chemicals
  • use sunscreen
