moving it is probably my least favorite activity. Growing up, my parents moved our family about 20 times - only in third grade, I was went to three different schools in three different states. Seven elementary schools later, I knew what it was to be "the new guy" more than anyone really wants, and clearly remember the feeling of isolation in a new place.
As an adult, I decided to stay. I went to college in southern California, a little over an hour from my house. I was home in the four years later. I built an amazing group of friends, my family was very close, and I had my favorite places almost anywhere he went. I was comfortable.
But when an exciting job opportunity opened in a new exciting city (hint: it is), I knew it was time for me to go to my comfort zone to enjoy an unbeatable experience. For me, the risk was low, and the benefits were infinite. . . but still he had to move.
And it was terrifying. Packing my car with as many material goods as could fit into a compact hybrid, I whispered "You're a tough guy" myself several times while driving 500 miles from my home in San Diego to start a new life . I myself said it was an "independent woman who does not need any man" impressive to make sure I leave my friends, family, old jobs, yoga studio, favorite juice place, and the community was the right decision.
So what does one do when they are new and alone in a totally new packed as San Francisco city? Reserve a lot of classes and fitness activities to compensate for the fact that you do not have a social life! Teasing, but also quite serious.
By diving in fitness, I opened myself to new friends, a new community, exploring new neighborhoods, he joined and have come to know my new city in an intimate and exciting way. Making Friends in studies
As an extrovert and perpetual new kid, I'm pretty comfortable talking to strangers. I'll (politely) jump into a conversation in the locker room or ask an instructor for coffee after class.
I spoke of this (over coffee, of course) with one of my instructors SoulCycle favorites, Luigi, who told me that studies here (as SoulCycle) encourage that community feeling - it actually going to take a coffee or breakfast every Friday with friends he has made in class. Because of that, go to class in your favorite study is more than just getting your workout; you are getting along with your community!
This "tactic" only talk to people and start conversations worked very well. I have also become close friends with my coach Caroline Equinox, which has shown me new routes for trips and weekend excursions as well as Breton ritual yoga, who invited me to his Fourth of July barbecue and made me feel as a longtime friend.

walking and running everywhere
Want to know a new place? Start walking! I will not lie - my challenge Fitbit with my father and one of my best friends took me totally to walk places that otherwise might have taken a bus or Uber to (I'm not very competitive, but I totally want to crush .. . with steps). Also, I do not like running on the treadmill (which is a good way to put it), so when I'm training for careers or just go run regular age, I like to mix it outside. I will run along the beach on the Embarcadero or through Golden Gate Park. Every time you go for a walk, I see something new and I feel much more connected to the city.
In addition, I have made a habit of finding a new place to run or plan a pitstop in a cafe I have not tried. This is to help find new places in the new districts would not have found otherwise - and not have to wait for someone to make plans. I can only go myself!
Next on my list? Joining a local running club to meet more people and get those extra miles with some company.

next weekend, I'm running the Half Marathon San Francisco; it will be the third half marathon run in the city, which makes me feel really connected to this place (and honestly, something like a local!). Making strong, positive memories here with great events has helped deepen my connection to my new home.
The other benefits of participating in such events as 5Ks, charity hiking and visiting exhibitions? Meet new people and give back to their local community. We went to the Dare to bare event organized by the Movemeant Foundation a few months ago, and in one fell swoop, became friends with an instructor and another girl my age - we went to a SoulCycle class together last week - and the money raised to fund athletic scholarships for local girls
Using ClassPass as a community passport
in a city like San Francisco, it's easy to get caught up in your own neighborhood. - there is so much packed in each and every one! But I've been testing ClassPass this month, which has largely acted as a passport to the city - have been exploring new neighborhoods that have never seen before (it's crazy, because science fiction is so tiny in the first place!).
And when I try a new study in a new neighborhood, I always try to find a place to eat nearby after I opened even more discoveries. Yoga on the ocean beach with a shop in a bowl of acai side of the street? Sounds awesome. Pilates in the Mission before dinner at that new vegan place? Sign me up! Megaformer in Nob Hill to counter all cruffins of Bakehouse Mr. Holmes Probably a good idea.
The short six months have been here have absolutely flown by, but I feel I've grown so much. I used the fitness as a tool to improve myself, and in the process, I made friends, seen more of the city, and got settled in a new place. the blow of leaving home also eased, helped me to adjust, and made the whole thing "be alone" much less fear. I think I'm an independent woman, after all.
