President Obama called on Monday for Congress to revise the controversial idea of offering an insurance plan administered by the government as part of the offer under the Affordable Care Act.
What has been described as the "public option" was scrapped from the health law in 2009 by a handful of conservative Democrats in the Senate. the vote of all Democrats was needed to pass the bill in view of the unanimous opposition of the party.

The public option has been a point of controversy from the start. It was included in the version of the health bill passed by the House of Representatives, and had the support of most Democrats in the Senate, before it was abandoned. Jason Furman , chairman, said the continued slow growth in health spending many years out of recession makes argument of some other economists who discovered in the US economy was primarily responsible for the decline in health spending "absurd at this time."
