We live in a stressful world, Harsh: Here's how to feel more joy
When I was in high school and feel overwhelmed or down, I would force myself to make a list of things I was grateful. If the bad feelings progressed, I continue writing this list every night before bedtime. I had just left my little diary or a piece of paper and write down everything in my life that brought me joy.
I began to reshift my approach; I had the opportunity to be mired in suffering and sadness or refocusing on the beautiful wonderful gifts, my life had to offer. Little did he know that this simple practice that began implementing as a teenager is actually rooted in science. Yes, there is a neuroscience of gratitude !
As Psychology Today reported, "Gratitude, especially if practiced regularly, can stay healthy and happy." a Chinese study also analyzed from 2012 that showed "higher levels of appreciation were associated with better sleep and less anxiety and depression."
Today, still I keep a gratitude journal ; A study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology said that "gratitude journals are an effective technique that can be useful for clinical practice." This study also reinforces the conclusion that gratitude is an effective way to treat depression and anxiety and improve sleep.
I also added the concept of practicing gratitude in my daily meditation practice . I took 10 minutes of my day to refocus myself and focus on the present moment; I had some things in my life that I am particularly grateful for every day.
Now more than ever, this practice is so important. When it seems that there is more violence in the news, shooting nonstop, incessant terrorism - we that shift our focus back to the positive, to the millions of cheerful beautiful things we have in this world and in our lives . In addition, it has been shown that gratitude in fact reduce violence . It helps, too!
can be as simple as "I'm healthy. I'm alive. I have two legs! I have people who love me. There is a roof over my head. I am able to read. I see." There are so many amazing things that we by sitting every day; good things become "normal", and that makes bad things feel worse. Remember that our "normal" is really very, very good! And if we change our goal just a little, we realize how good we have.
is easy to focus our attention on the terrible things that happen around the world - and I am by no means the marginalization of the seriousness of these events. They are horrible, and there is no way around that. But painting the world with a broad brush and say that we live in a terrible time will not help him in any way.
find strength and joy in appreciation. Choose to be grateful. We are stronger when we are armed with that power, and let's be honest, the world could use a little more happiness.
